The New Star Wars Canon

Nearly four months ago, Lucasfilm formed a special committee to determine what makes up the official Star Wars canon and what doesn’t. It became their job to figure out whether licensed products that tell the further stories of the Star Wars universe such as books, comic books, and video games will have a narrative bearing on future Star Wars films.

On April 25, 2014, posted an article outlining the future of the Star Wars Expanded Universe. The post can be summed up with the following quote:

“In order to give maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers and also preserve an element of surprise and discovery for the audience, Star Wars Episodes VII-IX will not tell the same story told in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe.”

The article stands by the fact that when it came to making movies, George Lucas was “not beholden to the EU (Expanded Universe)” and that the canon, “includes the six Star Wars episodes, and the many hours of content he developed and produced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.”

The Star Wars YouTube channel also presented a retrospective on the Expanded Universe:
